WHAT IS NEIGHBOURHOOD?

According to Cambridge Dictionary, neighbourhood is the area of a town that surrounds someone's home, or the people who live in this area while neighbours are meant for people who live near our house either in front, at the back, or besides our house who live in the same park, village, or city. Neighbourhood relations have become increasingly important in today's fast-paced world, but sometimes people tends to be selfish and do not care about what's happened around them hence lead to lack of neighbourhood spirit . Many people lives together without even get to know the names of their neighbours or having a close relationship with the community around them. Neighbours are important because they are the ones who will be our friends and the first person who will help us when we have problems because they are the nearest person whom we can reach for. "A good neighbour brings blessings," says the Malay proverb. Strong neighbourhood are the foundation of resilient settlements because they provide a support system, a network of security, and a sense of belonging that certainly improves everyone's life. Therefore, in an increasingly complex modern era, the concept of neighbourhood requires a meaningful transformation. Strong neighbourhood not only share a geographical area but build meaningful social bonds, understanding and supporting one another. The "Build a Stronger Neighbourhood" campaign aims to achieve several strategic goals.

A strong neighbourhood is the backbone of a harmonious society. It contributes to emotional well-being, safety, and social development. When neighbours know and trust each other, they are more likely to work together to solve problems, look out for one another, and create a supportive environment. For example, strong neighbourhood foster a sense of belonging where people feel less isolated and more connected to the world around them. These connections are especially vital for children and the elderly, who often rely on social bonds for emotional and physical support.

In addition, a stronger neighbourhood spirit creates a more safer environment. Communities where residents know each other tends to have lower crime rates because people are more vigilant and proactive in protecting their shared spaces. A cohesive neighbourhood also makes it easier for local authorities to address concerns since community members are more willing to voice out their issues and collaborate for solutions.

What is the Importance of a Strong Neighbourhood?
